MATERIALS

In order to ensure a smooth and punctual workflow and that the final products meet the expectations of our customers we have in the following gathered some bases regarding preparation and transfer of originations.

Material instructions
Our workflow favours that the originations are supplied in electronic form. We recommend that you send the originations in a closed format, PDF- or PostScript, as output ready material. Most commonly used today is PDF. The distiller settings for both sheet fed- and web offset printing can be picked up from the Download Center. However, if the originations are supplied as open document, do ensure that the image links work and that the fonts are included. We appreciate receiving print-outs of the pages, which can be sent by post. Contact us for additional instructions if necessary.

Our software
Our workflow supports most of the software on the market. In the equipment of our prepress -department we have installed for instance following software:

Mac: Adobe Acrobat, -InDesign, -Photoshop, -Illustrator, -Pagemaker and CorelDraw, QuarkXPress and Freehand.
PC: Adobe Acrobat, -InDesign, -Photoshop, -Illustrator, -Pagemaker and QuarkXPress and Freehand.

Images
Our manufacturing technique supports a final result of high quality and it is important to notice that the resolution of the images is sufficient. In high-res images it must be twice as big as the screen line ruling used in the printing, in sheet fed- and heat-set- web offset printing 300 dpi and in cold-set web offset printing 200 dpi. In sheet fed- and heat-set web offset printing the screen line ruling is 150 lpi (60 l/cm) and in cold-set web offset printing 100 lpi (40 l/cm). Be careful not to use too big size reductions or englargements.

We recommend that the images are saved in TIFF or EPS-format, and that the 4-colour images are already set as CMYK. In other cases please contact the printing house.
In order to achieve sufficient line sharpness the minimum resolution for scanned linearts is 600 dpi.

Guideline values for total ink coverage: sheet fed- and heat-set web offset printing 340 %, cold-set web offset printing 240 %.

Picture profiles
In materials for sheet fed- and heat-set web offset printing works you can use following colour profiles; Euroscale V2 coated profile for coated paper and Euroscale V2 uncoated profile for uncoated paper. Both are standard in Photoshop software.
As four colour profile for cold-set web offset printing we recommend that you use Painoyhtyma Rotaatio 2003, which we have created in connection with the updating of our printing machinery. You can download it from our Download Center. Ready colour settings for Photoshop, both for sheet fed- and web offset printing can also be downloaded from the Download Center. We gladly assist if you need more info about the installing of profiles and colour settings.

Fonts
If you supply open documents, remember to attach the used fonts. The fonts shall be in Type1 -form. If you have used Truetype fonts, you must mention this separately. Don't use "fast buttons" when changing a font to italics, bold, underlined, shaded or transparent, but instead use genuine fonts (e.g. bolded Helvetica = Helvetica Bold and cursivated Helvetica = Helvetica Oblique).

Trimming margins
Trimming margins are needed when an element (e.g. a picture or colour bottom) is in the margin of the print area. In sheet fed productions the cutting allowance is 3 mm and in web offset 5 mm. This way ugly white areas in the margins of the ready products are avoided.

Colour specification
Four-coloured work: all colours specified as process colours (CMYK). Note ! If you use PMS-colours in four-coloured materials, you must in the image program choose Process-colours.
Pantone, which means the PMS-colour scale, is meant for setting of additional colours, i.e. spot colours.
